Neuromodulator FAQ

How do they work?

Neuromodulators such as Botox® and Xeomin® are prescription medicines. They are injected into muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Facial expressions such as smiling, frowning, and grimacing cause subcutaneous muscular contraction. These muscles’ consistent movement draws skin together and causes it to become less elastic. The result? Wrinkles. When injected into muscles, neuromodulators block nerve impulses from activating the muscles, so the skin on the surface may appear relaxed.

There are two types of wrinkles: static and dynamic. Static wrinkles are present regardless of underlying muscular movement. These wrinkles that may or may lessen with injections. Dynamic wrinkles appear with muscle movement and improve with muscle relaxation; in some cases, repeated neuromodulator treatments can make these wrinkles disappear.

Where can they be used?

Neuromodulators can be used for dynamic wrinkles in the upper portion of the face. These injections can even be used to raise and shape brows in a process called a chemical brow lift; this procedure gives a winged look similar to that donned by models and Hollywood starlets. Neuromodulators can be also used on the lower part of the face. This can lessen the look of dimpled chins, neck bands, drooping noses, bulging jaw muscles, and fine lines around the lips.

What can I expect?

Treatments are quick: the entire procedure generally takes about an hour or less, and there is no recovery time. There are few side effects, and patients may resume normal activities immediately following treatment. Results may vary, but most patients experience an improvement within three to five days. This effect generally lasts for three to five months. Repeated treatments can lead to more enduring effects.

How is Dr. Roberts different?

There are a few things which Dr. Roberts does differently here to provide the best possible results along with the most comfortable experience:

1) Compared to many other providers, she uses smaller needles to inject. Small needles are more expensive, but they reduce bruising and discomfort.

2) She concentrates the medicine as much as possible to make the injections as small as possible. This reduces swelling and bruising while maximizing comfort. Unlike many clinics, the neuromodulators are not diluted.

3) She records the exact amount and precise location of each injection. This renders results reproducible. Should there be an issue with the effect, she can adjust the position and amount of medicine injected during follow-up treatments to optimize results.

4) She always performs the injections herself – no exceptions.
